Chapter 3 - The False Narrative

I stared at the caseworker, my mind struggling to process the sheer audacity of my mother's lie.
"Patricia Hutchinson filed a sworn affidavit claiming I assaulted my own child?" I asked, my voice shaking with rage.
The caseworker nodded, keeping her pen poised over the official state forms.
"Your mother claims you flew into a rage when the child spilled a drink, and your father was actually trying to protect her," the woman read aloud.
James let out a string of furious curses and began pacing around the waiting room.
"That is a complete fabrication designed to protect a wealthy abuser!" James yelled at the caseworker.
The woman took a step back, her eyes narrowing as she noted his aggressive tone.
"Sir, I need you to lower your voice immediately, or I will call hospital security," she warned.
I stepped in front of James and used the calm, measured voice I reserved for hostile judges.
"I spent eight years prosecuting child abuse cases in this very county," I informed her firmly.
"I know exactly how abusive families construct false narratives to protect their patriarchs," I added.
The caseworker looked unimpressed, completely immune to my professional credentials.
"Your professional background does not exempt you from a mandatory child endangerment investigation," she replied coldly.
"We have three other witnesses from the party who have already corroborated your mother's version of events," she revealed.
My heart sank as I realized Travis and Vanessa had clearly fallen in line behind my parents.
They had actively conspired to frame me for the horrific violence my father had committed.
"What about the physical evidence?" I challenged, leaning forward.
"The blunt force trauma on the back of Lily's head is completely inconsistent with a push into a counter," I argued.
The caseworker scribbled something on her pad without looking up.
"The medical examiner will determine the nature of the injury," she stated bureaucapatically.
"Until this investigation is concluded, neither of you are permitted to be alone with the child," she ordered.
"You cannot ban me from my daughter's bedside while she is fighting for her life!" I pleaded.
"A supervised visitation monitor will be assigned to her room once she is out of surgery," the woman dictated.
She handed me a thick packet of legal documents detailing the temporary custody suspension.
I took the papers with trembling hands, realizing my family had officially weaponized the state against me.
The caseworker turned to leave, but then she paused and looked directly at James.
"Mr. Hutchinson, your mother-in-law also expressed deep concerns about your personal history," she noted.
James completely froze, the angry color instantly draining from his face.
"She provided us with court records from a sealed incident that occurred twelve years ago," the caseworker added.
I looked at James in total confusion, having absolutely no idea what she was talking about.
"We will be factoring your husband's documented history of explosive violence into our final custody recommendation," she concluded.
The caseworker turned and walked down the hallway, leaving us in a suffocating, terrifying silence.
I slowly turned to face my husband, holding the custody suspension papers tightly against my chest.
"What sealed court records is she talking about, James?" I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.

James looked at the floor, unable to meet my eyes as a tear slipped down his cheek.
"Before I met you, I was arrested for nearly beating a man to death outside a bar," James confessed.
