Chapter 6 - The Empty House

Lily’s terrified screams echoed off the sterile walls of the hospital room.
James stood completely frozen, his face a mask of absolute heartbreak and utter confusion.
"Lily, sweetie, it is just Daddy," James pleaded softly, taking a slow step backward to give her space.
"No!" Lily shrieked, burying her face into the hospital pillow and sobbing uncontrollably.
The state-appointed visitation monitor aggressively pushed past me and stood between James and the bed.
"Sir, you need to step out into the hallway immediately," the monitor ordered with a stern, authoritative voice.
James looked at me with tears streaming down his face, silently begging me to fix this nightmare.
I gave him a reassuring nod, though my own heart was shattering into a million pieces.
He walked out of the room, leaving me alone with my traumatized child and the suspicious state worker.
I gently rubbed Lily’s back until her sobs slowed into exhausted, hiccuping breaths.
"Why are you scared of Daddy, baby?" I asked her in a soothing, quiet whisper.
Lily peeked out from under the blanket, her small eyes darting nervously toward the doorway.
"Grandma told me Daddy is a bad man who hurts people," Lily whispered innocently.
The sheer venom of my mother’s psychological manipulation hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
Patricia had used the chaos of the party to whisper poisonous lies into my daughter’s ear before the ambulance arrived.
She intentionally conditioned Lily to fear James to support her fabricated child abuse report.
"Grandma was lying to you, sweetie," I promised, kissing her forehead tenderly.
I walked out into the hallway and found James sitting on the floor with his head between his knees.
"My mother brainwashed her to fear you to win the custody battle," I told him grimly.
James punched the hospital wall in a fit of absolute, helpless rage.
"They are going to take her away from us, Rebecca," James cried in despair.
"No, they are not," I stated, the prosecutor inside me taking total control of the situation.
"I need an inside witness to testify against my parents, someone who cannot be written off as a hostile neighbor," I realized.
"Your brother is a lost cause, and your mother is the mastermind," James pointed out reasonably.
"But my sister Vanessa is weak, and she has always been terrified of perjury," I countered.
Vanessa had been standing less than five feet away when Gerald swung the belt.
If I could corner her and force her to testify under oath, the entire false narrative would instantly collapse.
I left James at the hospital and drove furiously to Vanessa’s upscale suburban neighborhood.
I pulled into her long driveway and noticed that all the lights in the house were completely off.
I marched up to the front door and pressed the glowing doorbell button repeatedly.
Nobody answered.
I walked around to the side of the house and peered through the large living room window.
The moonlight illuminated the interior, revealing a completely barren and empty living space.
The expensive leather couches, the massive television, and the family portraits were all entirely gone.
Vanessa’s family had packed up their entire lives and vanished in the middle of the night.
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine as I realized the depths of my parents' immense wealth and power.
They had essentially bought Vanessa’s silence by funding her sudden, midnight relocation.
Without Vanessa, I had absolutely no friendly witnesses left to corroborate my story.
My phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket, shattering the eerie silence of the empty property.
It was Marcus, the private investigator I had hired to hack the neighbor’s cloud server.
"I have good news and extremely bad news, Rebecca," Marcus said, his voice grave.
"Just tell me you got the video," I demanded, crossing my fingers tightly.
"I got the video, and it clearly shows your father striking the child with a belt," Marcus confirmed.
May you like
I let out a massive sigh of relief, feeling like the war was finally turning in my favor.
"But the video also clearly shows you standing directly behind your father holding a second belt," Marcus revealed.
