Chapter 6 - The Gold-Digger's Exit

While I was holding my newborn son in a diamond-class hospital suite, Marcus was losing the last piece of his hollow life.

With his bank accounts frozen and federal agents circling, Marcus was desperate. He returned to his apartment, only to find the door unlocked and the interior completely stripped bare.

Chloe was standing in the foyer, zipping up her last suitcase.

“What are you doing?” Marcus asked, his voice trembling.

“I’m leaving, Marcus,” she sneered, pulling on her sunglasses. “You’re broke, you’re under federal investigation, and you’re a complete pariah in this city. I’m not going down with your sinking ship.”

“But you love me!” he pleaded, grasping her arm. “We were supposed to build a life together after I got rid of Maya!”

Chloe laughed in his face, yanking her arm away. “I loved your credit limit. You really thought I wanted an unemployed felon?”

She walked out the door, leaving Marcus standing alone in an empty, echoing apartment that he could no longer afford. He sank to the floor, pulling his hair in despair. He realized then that every single thing in his life had been transactional. And his account was empty.
