Chapter 3 - The Parasite's Panic

Marcus was hyperventilating in the center of his luxury apartment. The apartment he had fought so ruthlessly to keep entirely in his name during the divorce.
He poured himself a glass of expensive scotch, but his hands were shaking so violently that it spilled across the granite counter. He had just thrown away the sole heiress to a $14 billion empire. If he had just stayed married for one more month—if he had just faked his affection a little longer—he would have had access to infinite wealth.
His front door clicked open. In walked Chloe, his twenty-four-year-old mistress, carrying bags from designer boutiques.
“Babe, you wouldn't believe the line at Chanel,” she whined, dropping the bags. She looked at his pale, sweating face. “What’s wrong with you? Did the judge not give you the apartment?”
“She got the apartment,” Marcus choked out. “I mean… no, I got the apartment. But Maya… Maya is Victoria Vance’s daughter.”
Chloe froze. The blood drained from her perfectly contoured face. “What? Victoria Vance? The billionaire? You just divorced a billionaire?!”

“I didn't know!” Marcus screamed, hurling his glass against the wall. “I have to fix this. I’m the father of her child. I have leverage. I can sue for primary custody. I can demand millions in child support from the Vance estate!”
Chloe looked at the shattered glass on the floor, then at the designer bags she had charged to Marcus’s quickly maxing-out credit cards. She was beginning to realize that Marcus wasn't the golden goose she thought he was. He was just a desperate man who had just painted a massive target on his own back.
