Chapter 4 - The Corporate Guillotine

By 9:00 AM the next morning, Victoria’s retaliation began. It was completely silent, legal, and utterly devastating.

Marcus worked as a senior vice president at an elite investment firm. He arrived at his office to find his keycard deactivated.

When he finally got past security, he found his office packed into three cardboard boxes. Standing by his desk was his CEO, looking terrified, accompanied by two men in dark suits.

“What’s going on?” Marcus demanded.

“You’re terminated, Marcus,” the CEO said, wiping sweat from his brow. “Effective immediately.”

“On what grounds?!”

One of the men in suits—a Vance corporate lawyer—stepped forward. “On the grounds of massive financial fraud. We conducted a brief audit of your accounts overnight. It appears you’ve been embezzling funds and hiding marital assets in offshore shell companies to keep them from Maya during the divorce. A federal offense.”

Marcus’s knees buckled. “You… you hacked me?”

“We simply provided the SEC with an anonymous tip,” the lawyer smiled coldly. “Your accounts are frozen. Your assets will be seized by the federal government pending an investigation. Good luck paying for a defense attorney.”

Marcus was escorted out of the building in front of all his colleagues. As he stood on the sidewalk holding his cardboard box, it began to rain. He had nothing. Exactly what he had wished upon me.
