Chapter 9 - The Cartel Intervenes

Elena realized instantly that Greg had completely lost control of his own operation.
The cartel had sent their own men to ensure the money was recovered.
Greg shoved Elena aggressively into the passenger seat of his SUV.
He climbed into the driver's seat and locked the doors.
"Do not try anything stupid, Elena," Greg warned, starting the engine.
"If you do not open that vault, Vanessa will execute Mia."
Elena looked out the window and saw the tattooed mercenary leading Mia into the dark warehouse.
She knew she had to get rid of Greg before the cartel realized he was expendable.
As Greg merged onto the empty midnight highway, Elena noticed he had left his phone on the center console.
"Margaret did not upgrade the security," Elena stated calmly, breaking the tense silence.
Greg glanced at her, his eyes narrowing in confusion.
"What are you talking about?" he snapped.
"I lied," Elena replied coldly.
Before Greg could react, Elena grabbed the steering wheel and violently jerked it to the right.
The heavy SUV swerved off the road, crashing forcefully through a wooden guardrail.
The vehicle rolled down a steep embankment, metal crunching and glass shattering in the dark.
The SUV finally slammed into a massive oak tree and came to a violently sudden halt.
Elena had braced herself for the impact, but Greg hit his head hard against the steering column.
He was completely unconscious.
Elena quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and grabbed Greg's pistol from his holster.
She kicked the shattered door open and scrambled up the muddy hill back to the road.
She flagged down a passing truck driver and stole his vehicle at gunpoint.
"I am so sorry," Elena yelled as she sped back toward the warehouse.
She arrived just as David managed to break free from his zip-ties in the back of the tactical truck.
David knocked out his guard and grabbed an assault rifle.
Elena ran to his side, handing him Greg's pistol.
"The cartel is here, David," Elena whispered rapidly.
"They have Mia in the office."
David's eyes darkened with pure, lethal determination.
They sneaked into the massive warehouse through a broken side window.
The cartel mercenaries were executing Greg's men one by one in the center of the room.
Vanessa was on her knees, crying and begging the tattooed leader for her life.
"Where is the money, Vanessa?" the cartel leader demanded, pressing a gun to her head.
Elena and David crept silently toward the elevated office overlooking the warehouse floor.
They saw Mia tied to a chair inside the glass room.
May you like
David kicked the office door open and shot the guard holding Mia hostage.
The gunshot echoed through the massive building, alerting every cartel member below them.
