Chapter 3 - The False Accusation

Elena stared at Greg in absolute disbelief.
"Are you out of your mind?" Elena demanded, her voice shaking with rage.
"I was washing dishes in the kitchen the entire time!"
Vanessa crossed her arms, a cold smirk playing on her lips.
"You had access to the kitchen, and you have access to hospital drugs," Vanessa stated calmly.
"It makes perfect sense to me."
The doctor looked incredibly uncomfortable and slowly backed out of the room.
"I have already notified the police, as is protocol," the doctor murmured before shutting the door.
Elena realized exactly what Greg and Vanessa were doing.
They were framing her to ensure she never saw a dime of the Whitmore fortune.
"You two are monsters," Elena whispered.
Greg pulled a folded piece of paper from his tailored suit jacket.
"This is an emergency medical power of attorney," Greg said, waving the document.
"It gives me full control over Margaret's medical decisions while she is incapacitated."
Elena knew what that meant immediately.
Greg had the legal authority to take Margaret off life support.
"You cannot do this," Elena pleaded, stepping forward.
"Security will escort you off the premises, Elena," Vanessa said smoothly.
Two large hospital security guards suddenly appeared in the hallway.
Elena was forced to leave the hospital, her mind racing with sheer panic.
She drove back to her small apartment, tears blurring her vision.
She paid the neighbor and hugged Mia tightly, promising everything would be okay.
After Mia fell asleep, Elena's cell phone buzzed in the dark.
It was an unknown number.
She cautiously answered the phone.
"Elena, it is Nurse Jenkins from the intensive care unit," a rushed voice whispered.
"Margaret woke up for exactly ten seconds."
Elena sat up straight in her bed.
"What did she say?" Elena asked breathlessly.

"She did not say anything," Jenkins replied.
"She pointed to her gold locket, managed to open it, and told me to give you the key hidden inside before Greg finds it."
