Chapter 7 - The Dead Man Walking

"David?" Elena gasped, her knees nearly giving out on the train platform.
"Keep walking, do not stop, and do not look around," David instructed rapidly.
Elena followed his commands, blending into the crowded transit terminal.
"Greg's men are tracking your phone's location," David explained.
"Drop your phone in the nearest trash can right now."
Elena hesitated, thinking of the evidence she had just downloaded.
"I backed up the files to a secure cloud server," Elena lied smoothly.
She tossed the cell phone into a metal garbage bin.
"Go to the blue sedan parked outside exit four," David commanded through the terminal speakers above her.
He had hacked the station's intercom system to guide her.
Elena ran to the exit and found the running vehicle.
She opened the passenger door and collapsed into the seat.
David was sitting behind the wheel, looking older, scarred, and heavily armed.
Elena wanted to scream at him, hit him, and hold him all at the same time.
"I am so sorry, Elena," David whispered, refusing to look her in the eyes.
"I had to leave to keep you and Mia safe from the syndicate."
"They took Mia today, David," Elena sobbed, burying her face in her hands.
David's grip on the steering wheel tightened until his knuckles turned pure white.
"Vanessa used CPS to kidnap her," Elena explained quickly.
"They want the vault key in exchange for our daughter."
David slammed his foot on the accelerator, merging violently into the city traffic.
"We are not giving them the key," David stated coldly.
"Greg will kill Mia the second he has what he wants."
"Then what do we do?" Elena demanded, panic rising in her throat.
"We go to the warehouse tonight," David replied.
"But we do not bring the key, we bring a war."
David opened the glove compartment, revealing two loaded handguns and tactical zip-ties.
He handed a weapon to Elena.
"You are a nurse, Elena, but tonight you need to be a soldier."
They drove back toward their hometown under the cover of darkness.
When they pulled up to the abandoned Whitmore warehouse, David turned off the headlights.
"I will go in first and draw their fire," David said, unbuckling his seatbelt.

Suddenly, a massive spotlight flicked on from the roof of the warehouse, blinding them entirely.
A heavily armored tactical truck rammed violently into the side of their sedan.
