Chapter 5 - The Phantom Husband

Elena froze, her eyes darting from the gun to Greg's cold, dead expression.

"How did you find me?" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible.

Greg smirked and tapped his expensive watch.

"I put a GPS tracker on your car while you were busy playing nurse last night," Greg explained.

He stepped into the small room and locked the heavy vault door behind him.

"Hand over the folder, Elena," Greg demanded, gesturing with the pistol.

Elena slowly picked up the financial ledgers and the photograph of David.

"David is alive," Elena said, her voice shaking with betrayal and anger.

"You forced my husband to fake his own death."

Greg laughed, a dark and hollow sound that chilled her to the bone.

"David was weak," Greg sneered.

"He found out I was using the family charity to launder money for a Mexican cartel."

Greg snatched the documents from her trembling hands.

"He was going to the FBI, so I gave him a choice," Greg continued.

"Die in a fiery car crash, or watch you and Mia get murdered in your sleep."

Tears streamed down Elena's face as the last three years of grief suddenly turned into burning rage.

Her husband had abandoned them, but he had done it to keep them alive.

"And Margaret?" Elena asked, stalling for time.

"Margaret was too smart for her own good," Greg sighed.

"She found the same ledgers David did, so Vanessa handled her at the party."

Greg raised the pistol directly at Elena's head.

"It is a shame you could not just sit quietly at the party," Greg murmured.

Elena noticed the heavy steel deposit box sitting on the table between them.

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, she grabbed the heavy metal box and hurled it directly at Greg's face.

The corner of the box struck his nose with a sickening crunch.

Greg screamed in pain, dropping the gun as blood poured down his face.

Elena scrambled past him, unlocking the vault door and sprinting out into the crowded bank lobby.
