Chapter 9 - The Final Exchange

Vanessa held the barrel of her weapon pressed tightly against my father’s trembling temple.
She kicked the door shut behind her, locking us all in the room before the SWAT team could advance.
She looked like an absolute madwoman, her champagne dress ruined and her eyes wide with desperation.
Vanessa revealed that the harbor explosion was a desperate distraction she had orchestrated to fake her own death.
She did not care about the police, the engagement, or my father’s pathetic attempt to flee the country.
She only wanted the physical ledger containing the syndicate's blackmail material, which was hidden inside the BMW.
She demanded that Daniel hand over the ledger immediately, or she would execute my father in front of us.
My mother screamed in terror, begging Daniel to give Vanessa whatever she wanted to save her husband.
Daniel calmly reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound notebook he had retrieved from the impound lot.
He stared at my father, the man who had shoved his pregnant wife and tried to steal our entire future.
My father wept, pathetically pleading for his life and promising to turn himself in to the authorities.
Daniel looked at Vanessa, acknowledging that this notebook was the only thing keeping her alive from the syndicate.
Instead of handing it to her, Daniel turned and hurled the heavy ledger out the shattered fourth-floor window.
We watched the book fall perfectly into the hands of the tactical police commanders coordinating outside.
Vanessa screamed in absolute fury, realizing her leverage and her life were now completely forfeited.
She turned her weapon away from my father and aimed it directly at my hospital bed in a final act of pure spite.
My father, in a shocking moment of desperate panic, lunged toward Vanessa to seize the gun.
The weapon discharged with a deafening crack that shattered the remaining glass in the room.
Daniel tackled Vanessa to the floor, disarming her with a brutal strike as the SWAT team finally breached the room.

I screamed in agony as the most intense contraction yet tore through my body.
The baby was coming right now, surrounded by shattered glass, armed police, and absolute chaos.
