Chapter 5 - The Unwelcome Visitor

The morning sun cast long, cold shadows across my sterile hospital room.
Marissa had just informed me that Daniel was being held in county jail without bail.
Vanessa had played the role of a terrified victim perfectly, convincing the police that Daniel was a deranged attacker.
Because my father had pulled strings with his corrupt contacts in the precinct, the charges were severely escalated.
I felt completely trapped, confined to a hospital bed while my husband was locked in a cage.
Marissa promised she was filing an emergency motion for his release, but the courts were deliberately stalling.
She left the room to make a series of aggressive phone calls to a federal judge she knew.
The moment she stepped into the hallway, the door to my room clicked shut and locked from the inside.
I turned my head and saw my father standing at the foot of my bed.
He was wearing a fresh suit, looking entirely unbothered by his arrest the previous night.
He explained that he had easily posted bail using the funds he had previously stolen from my accounts.
My father calmly walked over and placed a thick stack of legal documents on my tray table.
He told me that Daniel was going to spend the next twenty years in prison for attempted murder.
However, he offered to make the fake charges disappear if I signed over my entire trust fund and company shares today.
He also demanded that I legally surrender ownership of the BMW and its hidden contents to him.
I stared at him with pure disgust, asking how a father could possibly do this to his own pregnant daughter.
He simply adjusted his tie and stated that family loyalty meant making sacrifices for the greater good.
He handed me a silver pen and gave me exactly one hour to make my final decision.
He warned me that if I refused, Daniel would not survive his first week in the county jail.
My father unlocked the door and strutted out of the room like a victorious king.
I picked up the silver pen, my hands trembling with a mixture of terror and overwhelming rage.

As I moved the tray table closer, I noticed a tiny, blinking red light hidden inside the bouquet of flowers Ethan had brought earlier.
It was a sophisticated listening device, broadcasting every single word directly to the syndicate.
