Chapter 4 - The Impound Trap

I stared at the television screen in absolute horror as the flames consumed my vehicle.

Marissa immediately pulled out her cell phone to call Daniel, but his line went straight to voicemail.

My heart hammered against my ribs, convinced that my husband had just walked into a fatal trap.

I frantically pressed the nurse call button, demanding to be discharged against medical advice.

Marissa gently pushed me back onto the pillows, warning me that stressing myself would kill the baby.

She promised to use her firm's private investigators to find out exactly what happened at the harbor.

Meanwhile, halfway across the city, Daniel was not anywhere near the burning warehouse.

He had realized the GPS signal on his phone was a decoy designed to throw him off the real trail.

He had tracked the vehicle's secondary emergency beacon to a sketchy, unlit impound lot in South Boston.

Daniel crept through the maze of rusted cars and broken glass under the cover of darkness.

He finally spotted the pristine white BMW parked near a chain-link fence.

Vanessa was standing at the back of the vehicle, aggressively prying the trunk open with a steel crowbar.

Daniel stepped out of the shadows and demanded that she step away from our property.

Vanessa dropped the crowbar and turned around with a cold, terrifying smile on her face.

She reached into her champagne-colored dress and pulled out a suppressed tactical pistol.

She aimed the weapon directly at Daniel's chest, demanding the electronic key fob to unlock the hidden compartment.

Daniel slowly raised his hands, pretending to reach into his coat pocket for the keys.

Instead, he activated the car's remote panic alarm, triggering a deafening siren and blinding flashing lights.

Vanessa flinched in surprise, giving Daniel the split second he needed to tackle her to the gravel.

The gun skittered across the ground as they fought fiercely in the flashing lights of the BMW.

Daniel managed to pin her down, but a dozen bright searchlights suddenly illuminated the impound lot.

A swarm of heavily armed police officers rushed forward with their weapons drawn.

Vanessa immediately began crying hysterically, pointing at Daniel and screaming that he was trying to assault her.

The police violently pulled Daniel off her and slammed him against the hood of the car, placing him in handcuffs.
