Chapter 8 - The Standoff

Carol's hand trembled slightly, but her eyes were filled with desperate, unhinged malice.

She demanded that I hand over the lockbox and the will immediately.

My father bravely stepped toward her, trying to shield me from the weapon.

Carol screamed at him to stay back, cocking the hammer of the gun with a loud click.

She admitted that her luxury high-rise project was nothing but a massive, illegal Ponzi scheme.

If she didn't get my guarantor funding restored by tomorrow, the cartel she borrowed money from was going to kill her.

I realized she was a cornered animal with absolutely nothing left to lose.

She was willing to murder her own family to save herself from the consequences of her greed.

I slowly reached into the metal lockbox and pulled out the fragile, ancient will.

I looked her dead in the eye, refusing to show a single ounce of fear.

Instead of handing it to her, I pulled a silver cigarette lighter from my pocket.

I ignited the flame and held it dangerously close to the edge of the irreplaceable paper.

Carol screamed in pure panic, dropping her aim as she lunged forward to save the document.

My father seized the opportunity and tackled her violently to the wooden floor.
