Chapter 2 - The Stolen Deed

I stood frozen in the middle of my living room as my father’s words echoed in my ear.
I demanded to know how Carol could possibly take out a mortgage on a house she didn't own.
My father confessed a dark secret he had kept hidden for over a decade.
When Marianne and I first bought this house, my parents helped us with the down payment using trust funds.
Carol had slipped a hidden clause into the paperwork, giving her LLC the right to use the property as collateral.
I realized with a sickening wave of dread that my home was financially tied to the luxury high-rise project I had just sabotaged.
If Carol’s construction loan went into default tomorrow morning, the bank would seize my house.
Marianne saw the color drain from my face and stood up, asking what was wrong.
I explained the trap Carol had set, watching my wife’s eyes fill with absolute terror.
We had exactly forty-eight hours to fix this mess before the bank initiated foreclosure proceedings.
I told my father I would not back down and reinstate the guarantor agreement just to save myself.
He warned me that Carol was completely ruthless when cornered.
I hung up the phone and walked straight back into my home office.
I opened a dusty drawer and pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook that had belonged to my late grandfather.
Before he died, he gave me the master passwords to the family trust's private servers.
I logged into the portal, bypassing the basic security measures Carol had installed.
I needed to find proof of her embezzlement to show the bank that the loan was fraudulent.
I clicked through folders of financial statements, offshore accounts, and shady wire transfers.
Then, I noticed a heavily encrypted folder sitting at the very bottom of the directory.
The folder was simply titled with my wife's name.

I cracked the password using my grandfather’s birthdate and opened the files.
Inside was a detailed, terrifying private investigator's report on Marianne.
