Chapter 7 - The Grandfather's Will

I remembered exactly where my grandfather kept his most precious, dangerous secrets.
There was a hidden floor safe buried beneath the heavy wooden floorboards of my parents' attic.
Under the cover of darkness, I left my family at a cheap motel and sneaked into my parents' house.
My father was waiting for me in the kitchen, looking exhausted but determined to help.
We climbed up to the dusty attic and used a crowbar to pry up the old, groaning floorboards.
We reached into the insulation and pulled out a heavy, rusted metal lockbox.
I grabbed a hammer from my father's toolkit and smashed the rusted padlock until it shattered.
I threw the lid open and dug through piles of old photographs and war medals.
At the very bottom, wrapped in protective plastic, was the original, notarized will from ten years ago.
I read the faded ink, my eyes widening as I scanned the strict moral clauses my grandfather had written.
The document explicitly stated that Carol was to be permanently disinherited if she ever denied an adopted child their rightful share.
I smiled, realizing I finally had the ultimate weapon to destroy her empire.
I turned around to show the miraculous document to my father.
My heart stopped completely.

Aunt Carol was standing in the shadows of the attic doorway.
She was holding a loaded revolver pointed directly at my father's head.
