Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

I stared at the blinking red dot on the digital map, calculating the exact distance to downtown Miami.

"He's back in the country," I realized aloud, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"He must have returned because he knew Mom and Dad were being evicted and the files were vulnerable."

Grandma Ruth immediately stood up from the kitchen stool, her eyes blazing with protective fury.

"I will call the local Miami authorities and have his hotel room completely surrounded in twenty minutes," she stated firmly.

I placed my hand gently over hers to stop her from dialing the police.

"I need to look him in the eyes, Grandma. I need him to see exactly what he threw away before he goes to prison."

Grandma Ruth frowned, deeply concerned for my physical safety.

"He is a cold-blooded murderer, Kate. He will not hesitate to kill you to protect his freedom."

"I am not going alone," I assured her, glancing toward the front door where two of her armed private security guards were now stationed.

I left Emma safely asleep under Grandma Ruth's watchful eye and climbed into a black SUV with the security team.

We drove aggressively through the dark city streets, reaching the luxurious beachfront hotel in under an hour.

The security guards flashed their private investigator badges to the hotel concierge, demanding the room number for David's alias.

We rode the glass elevator to the penthouse suite on the forty-second floor, the silence thick and heavy with anticipation.

I gestured for the armed guards to wait exactly out of sight around the hallway corner.

I needed David to believe I had come alone, so he would drop his guarded facade.

I took a deep breath, steadying my violently shaking hands, and knocked firmly on the heavy mahogany door.

A few seconds later, the door swung open, and I stood face-to-face with my dead husband.

He looked older, deeply tanned, and completely shocked to see me standing there.

"Kate?" he whispered, his eyes darting frantically past me to check the empty hallway.

"Hello, David. Or should I call you by the alias on your fake passports?" I asked coldly, stepping into the lavish suite.

He backed away, raising his hands defensively as if I were holding a weapon.

"How did you find me? I paid Dana perfectly to ensure those basement files were permanently destroyed," he stammered.

"Dana is currently sitting in a jail cell, and the files are in the possession of the federal authorities," I lied effortlessly.

David's face turned completely pale, and he rushed quickly toward a heavy suitcase sitting on the king-sized bed.

"You need to leave, Kate. You have absolutely no idea who you are dealing with anymore," he warned, reaching into the bag.

I didn't flinch or take a single step backward.

"I know exactly who you are, David. You are a coward who murdered an innocent man to fake his own death."

"You abandoned your beautiful daughter to live on stolen money with my psychotic sister."

He pulled a small, silver handgun from the suitcase and pointed it directly at my chest.

"I did what I had to do to survive, Kate. Your family was incredibly toxic, and I wanted out," he tried to justify his crimes.

"So you stole millions of dollars instead of simply asking for a divorce?" I mocked him fiercely.

His hand shook slightly as he realized I was not the naive, compliant wife he had left behind six years ago.

"I will shoot you, Kate. I am not going to spend the rest of my life in a concrete box," he threatened, stepping closer.

Before he could place his finger fully on the trigger, a loud, familiar voice echoed from the open doorway behind me.

"Put the gun down, Dad," Emma said quietly.
