Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Ally

Dana froze completely, her heavy arm suspended mid-swing as she looked toward the open doorway.
Standing on the porch, holding a large, black hunting rifle leveled perfectly at Dana’s chest, was Grandma Ruth.
Despite being eighty-two years old, her hands were as steady as a seasoned sniper's.
"I said drop it, you pathetic excuse for a granddaughter," Grandma Ruth commanded fiercely.
The heavy tire iron clattered loudly against the hardwood floor as Dana quickly raised her trembling hands.
"Grandma, you don't understand, Kate is lying about everything!" Dana pleaded desperately, trying to manipulate her.
Grandma Ruth stepped slowly into the house, her piercing blue eyes entirely devoid of any mercy.
"I understand perfectly, Dana. I have known about the missing money for exactly three years," she stated coldly.
Dana’s face drained of all color, realizing her massive web of lies had been entirely transparent.
"Then why didn't you turn me into the police?" Dana stammered, backing away toward the kitchen.
"Because I didn't have concrete proof until I hired my own private investigators last month," Grandma Ruth explained.
"I was waiting to evict your parents until I had everything I needed to put you all in federal prison."
"Emma showing up at my door in tears simply accelerated my eviction timeline."
Grandma Ruth gestured with the heavy rifle, forcing Dana to sit obediently on the floor with her hands on her head.
I ran quickly up the stairs to check on Emma, who was hiding safely in the attic crawlspace.
I carried my crying daughter back down to the living room, holding her tightly against my chest.
"Are you alright, Kate?" Grandma Ruth asked, not taking her eyes off Dana for a single second.
"I am fine, Grandma. But the files in the basement... they prove Dana murdered David," I whispered, handing her the manila folder.
Grandma Ruth’s expression darkened into something truly terrifying as she flipped open the file with one hand.
She read the private investigator’s report, her jaw clenching tightly with silent fury.
"I knew they were thieves, but I never imagined they were capable of cold-blooded murder," Grandma muttered.
She pulled a sleek, modern smartphone from her coat pocket and dialed a number with her thumb.
"Arthur, call the police and send them to the house immediately. I have a confession and the murder weapon," she instructed her lawyer.
Dana began sobbing loudly on the floor, begging for forgiveness and promising to return all the stolen money.
"You can't buy back a father's life with stolen cash, Dana," I told her, feeling absolutely zero pity for her tears.
Within ten minutes, three police cruisers arrived with their sirens blaring loudly down the quiet street.
They arrested Dana without incident, placing her in heavy metal handcuffs and reading her rights.
Grandma Ruth handed the murder evidence file directly to the lead detective on the scene.
"My daughter and her husband are also heavily involved in the embezzlement cover-up," Grandma Ruth informed the officer.
"I want warrants issued for their immediate arrest as well."
The detective nodded grimly, promising to hunt down my parents before they could flee the state.
After the police left with Dana in the back of a cruiser, the massive house finally felt quiet and safe.
Grandma Ruth sat heavily on a remaining chair, looking exhausted but incredibly triumphant.
"You and Emma will never have to worry about those toxic monsters ever again," she promised us softly.
I hugged her tightly, profoundly grateful for the fierce protection she had provided us.
"We can finally start our new life here, Emma," I said, kissing the top of my daughter's head.
Emma smiled weakly, still clearly shaken by the chaotic violence she had just witnessed.
I walked into the kitchen to grab Grandma Ruth a glass of water from the tap.
As I opened the cupboard, a small, black smartphone that I didn't recognize suddenly lit up on the counter.
It must have fallen out of Dana's pocket during the brief struggle on the stairs.

A text message appeared on the locked screen, and the sender's name made my blood run entirely cold.
The message was from David, my allegedly deceased husband.
