Chapter 10 - A New Threat

I stared at the unmarked black envelope resting ominously on my clean pantry shelf, a sudden chill running down my spine.

My heart began to hammer violently against my ribs as I cautiously picked it up, noting there was no postage or return address.

Someone had physically bypassed Grandma Ruth's advanced security system and placed this envelope directly inside my home.

I glanced back into the living room, immensely relieved to see Emma still laughing at a movie on the television.

I turned my back to the doorway and carefully tore the thick paper open with trembling fingers.

Inside was a single, glossy 8x10 photograph and a small, handwritten note written in precise block letters.

The photograph showed Grandma Ruth sitting at a fancy restaurant, secretly handing a thick manila folder to my deceased husband, David.

The timestamp printed brightly in the corner of the photograph indicated it was taken exactly one week before David faked his death six years ago.

I felt all the air completely leave my lungs as the horrifying implication of the image washed over me.

Grandma Ruth wasn't the heroic savior who had swooped in to rescue me from my toxic family's corruption.

She was the original mastermind who had secretly orchestrated the massive trust fund embezzlement from the very beginning.

She had paid David to disappear because he was threatening to expose her role as the true criminal leader of the family.

My parents and Aunt Dana were merely her expendable puppets, and she had brilliantly sacrificed them to the police to permanently cover her own tracks.

I unfolded the small handwritten note, my hands shaking so badly the words blurred before my eyes.

"She played you perfectly, Kate. If you want the rest of the proof to take her down, meet me at the old marina at midnight."

The note wasn't signed, but the terrifying truth was already loud and clear.

The game wasn't over; the true villain was currently sitting in my living room, sipping hot chocolate with my innocent daughter.
