Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

I stared at the glowing screen of the dropped smartphone, completely paralyzed by the name on the caller ID.
The text message from "David" simply read: "Did you secure the files from the basement yet?"
My hands trembled violently as I picked up the sleek device, my mind racing to comprehend the impossible.
David had been dead for six years; I had personally identified his mangled body at the county morgue.
I swiped the screen, desperately hoping the phone was completely unlocked, but a complex passcode prompt blocked my entry.
I carried the phone back into the living room, my face completely drained of all color.
"What is wrong, Kate? You look like you've seen a ghost," Grandma Ruth noted, sitting up straighter in her chair.
"I think I might have," I whispered, showing her the cryptic text message on Dana's phone.
Grandma Ruth squinted at the screen, her fierce expression instantly returning.
"This has to be a sick prank, or perhaps Dana saved an accomplice's number under his name," she reasoned logically.
I shook my head, feeling a deep, intuitive dread settling heavily into my stomach.
"Dana said David was going to ruin everything because he found out about the embezzlement," I recalled aloud.
"What if he didn't die in that crash? What if the crash was faked so he could run away with a cut of the stolen money?"
Grandma Ruth's eyes widened as the horrific implication of my theory fully registered.
If David had faked his own death, it meant he had willingly abandoned Emma and me to live as a wealthy fugitive.
"We need to get into this phone immediately," Grandma Ruth decided, pulling her own cell phone from her pocket.
She called Arthur, her highly resourceful estate lawyer, and demanded he send over a private digital forensics expert.
Within an hour, a quiet, intense man named Felix arrived at the house with a heavy briefcase full of hacking equipment.
He connected Dana's locked phone to his laptop and began running a series of aggressive brute-force decryption programs.
Emma had fallen asleep on the couch, completely exhausted by the day's terrifying events, so I sat pacing nervously in the kitchen.
Finally, the decryption software beeped loudly, and Felix announced that he had successfully bypassed the lock screen.
"I need you to pull up the entire text history with the contact named David," I ordered, leaning over his shoulder.
Felix clicked rapidly through the messaging application, bringing up hundreds of encrypted conversations spanning several years.
I read the messages, and my heart completely shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
David had been actively communicating with Dana since the day of his supposed funeral.
He had helped Dana orchestrate the embezzlement, taking a massive forty percent cut of the stolen trust funds.
The body in the morgue had been a homeless man they had murdered and intentionally burned beyond recognition in David's car.
David had abandoned us not because he was dead, but because he was a greedy, sociopathic criminal.
"He's been living in a luxury villa in Costa Rica for six years," Felix noted, pulling up a series of attached photographs.
The pictures showed my husband drinking expensive champagne on a private yacht, looking incredibly wealthy and carefree.
"He traded his family for money," I whispered, tears of pure, unadulterated fury streaming down my cheeks.
Grandma Ruth slammed her hand violently onto the kitchen island, her face pale with absolute rage.
"Arthur is contacting the FBI right now. We are going to have him extradited and thrown in a federal supermax prison," she vowed.
I wiped the tears from my face, a newfound, cold determination replacing my immense sorrow.
"No, Grandma," I said firmly, looking at the sleeping form of my daughter on the couch.
"He walked away from us six years ago, and I am not going to let him drag us through a massive public trial."
I turned back to Felix, pointing directly at the location data pinned on the phone's screen.

"Can you trace the exact IP address of his current location right now?" I asked the hacker.
Felix nodded slowly. "Yes, he's currently active on this network connection in a high-rise hotel in downtown Miami."
