Chapter 6 - The False Arrest

The cold steel of the handcuffs snapped tightly around my wrists.
The entire boardroom erupted into chaotic shouting as my board of directors demanded an explanation from the police.
Elena stood securely behind the armed officers, wiping fake tears from her eyes.
She loudly claimed that I had personally forced her to authorize the illegal offshore wire transfer.
She showed the police a fabricated email chain that perfectly mirrored my writing style and contained my digital signature.
Julian immediately stepped forward, playing the role of the shocked and devastated husband once again.
He dramatically apologized to the board members, claiming he had tried to stop my supposed criminal activities to protect the company.
The officers ignored the protests of my loyal investors and forcefully guided me out of the boardroom.
I was marched through the busy lobby of my own corporate headquarters, humiliated in front of my hundreds of employees.
They placed me into the back of a police cruiser and drove me directly to the central precinct downtown.
I spent four agonizing hours locked inside a damp, concrete holding cell.
My mind raced wildly, trying to figure out how Julian had managed to flawlessly frame me for his own theft.
Finally, the heavy iron door of the holding cell slid open with a loud metallic clank.
Evelyn walked into the room, holding a briefcase and looking completely exhausted.
She informed me that the judge had granted my bail, but my passport had been confiscated immediately.
I stepped out into the bright lights of the police station, rubbing my bruised wrists.
Evelyn explained that Elena had planted the fifty million dollars into an offshore account registered in my maiden name.
The evidence against me was incredibly strong, and the corrupt judge was pushing for a rapid trial.
I realized that unless we could prove Elena and Julian were romantically and financially conspiring, I was going to federal prison.
We walked out to Evelyn's car in the dark parking lot, the cold Chicago wind biting at my face.
I sat in the passenger seat, feeling a deep wave of utter hopelessness washing over me.
Suddenly, my personal cell phone buzzed in my pocket with an encrypted text message from an unknown number.
I opened the message cautiously, expecting another cruel threat from Beatrice or Julian.
Instead, the message contained a high-resolution photograph of Julian and Elena kissing passionately inside a hotel room.
The text below the image demanded my immediate attention.
It read that the sender possessed the original, unedited banking documents and a hard drive full of Julian's true plans.
I quickly replied, asking the mysterious sender to reveal their identity and their price.
The phone rang seconds later, and I answered it with trembling hands.

The voice on the other end belonged to Cynthia, Julian's notoriously shallow younger sister.
She coldly stated that she hated her family and would give me all the evidence I needed for exactly two million dollars in untraceable cash.
