Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Ambush

My heart dropped violently into my stomach at Beatrice's terrifying revelation.
I turned around without saying another word and sprinted down the long glass corridor toward the main boardroom.
Through the frosted glass walls, I could see the shadowy figures of my entire board of directors.
I threw the heavy wooden doors open, causing every single person in the room to jump in surprise.
Arthur Sterling was standing at the head of the long conference table, pointing at a projected slide of my company's falling stock prices.
Julian was sitting beside him, playing the role of the deeply concerned and grieving husband.
I marched directly to the front of the room and demanded that Arthur step away from my presentation screen.
Arthur adjusted his expensive tie and looked at the board members with a manufactured expression of deep sadness.
He softly told the board that my aggressive entrance was sad proof of my declining mental state.
Julian stood up slowly, reaching out a hand as if trying to calm a frightened wild animal.
He begged me to go back home and rest, claiming that the wedding stress had finally broken my fragile mind.
The senior board members exchanged nervous, uncomfortable glances, clearly swayed by the Sterling family's brilliant acting.
One of my oldest investors cleared his throat and quietly suggested that I take a temporary medical leave of absence.
I knew that if I stepped down for even one single day, Julian would authorize the fifty million dollar transfer permanently.
I pulled my smartphone from my jacket pocket and connected it directly to the boardroom's audio system.
I looked Julian directly in the eyes and told him that his mother was far too arrogant for her own good.
I pressed play on the audio file I had just recorded in my executive suite.
Beatrice's crisp, arrogant voice echoed loudly through the silent boardroom.
The board members gasped as they heard Beatrice openly confessing to the document forgery and the fake medical petition.
Julian's face turned completely white as his brilliant, malicious plan fell to pieces in front of a live audience.
Arthur collapsed into his leather chair, holding his chest in absolute shock.
The senior investor immediately slammed his fist on the table, demanding that the building's security forcibly remove the Sterling men.
I smiled in absolute victory, knowing I had finally successfully defended my empire.
But my moment of triumph was suddenly shattered by the sound of heavy boots marching down the hallway.
The boardroom doors swung open again, revealing three uniformed police officers.
They were accompanied closely by Elena Rostova, the corrupt bank manager and Julian's secret mistress.
Elena pointed a trembling finger directly at my face, pretending to cry hysterically.

The lead police officer pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
He loudly announced that I was under immediate arrest for the massive embezzlement of fifty million dollars from my own corporate clients.
