Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Tea

The hospital bracelet slipped from Evelyn’s trembling fingers and hit the dusty floor.
It was the ultimate proof that the billionaire’s heir was her own flesh and blood.
The baby she had mourned for five agonizing years was sleeping just a few floors above her.
Eleanor Sterling had not just destroyed her life, she had literally stolen her only child.
A sudden click at the door jolted Evelyn from her absolute shock.
The heavy oak door swung open, revealing the head butler, Victor, holding a tray.
"The matriarch requests that you drink this calming tea before you sleep," Victor said in a monotone voice.
Evelyn stared at the steaming porcelain cup, her survival instincts screaming at her to run.
"I am not thirsty," she replied, secretly kicking the lockbox further under the bed.
Victor stepped into the room, his towering figure blocking her only exit.
"It was not a request, Miss Vance," he stated coldly, reaching into his tailored suit jacket.
He pulled out a silver suppressed pistol and aimed it directly at her chest.
"Drink the tea, or I will make this look like a tragic suicide," he threatened.
Evelyn picked up the teacup, her hands shaking so violently the liquid splashed over the edges.
She brought the ceramic rim to her lips, closing her eyes as the bitter scent filled her nose.
Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed down the hallway outside the servant’s quarters.
"Where is she!" Alexander's furious voice boomed through the quiet manor.
Victor cursed under his breath, quickly hiding the gun back inside his jacket.
Alexander burst into the tiny room, his expensive suit disheveled and his eyes wild.
He saw the teacup in Evelyn's hand and instantly slapped it away, shattering it against the brick wall.
A dark, corrosive liquid bubbled wildly as it ate through the wooden floorboards.
Victor tried to slip past them in the confusion, but Alexander grabbed him by the throat.
He slammed the tall butler against the wall, cutting off his air supply completely.
"Who gave the order?" Alexander roared, tightening his lethal grip.
Victor gasped for air, his face turning a sickening shade of purple.
"It was not your mother, sir," Victor choked out, smiling a bloody, terrible smile.

Evelyn gasped and covered her mouth as Victor revealed the horrifying truth.
"The order came from your beautiful dead wife."
