Chapter 6 - The Retrieval

I stared at the barrel of the gun, my mind entirely unable to process the impossible betrayal unfolding before me.

"Sarah, what are you doing?" I pleaded, taking a slow, cautious step toward the woman I loved.

Sarah did not lower the weapon, her beautiful face hardened into a cold, unrecognizable mask of pure focus.

"Do not take another step, Marcus," she commanded, her voice completely devoid of any familiar warmth.

"I cannot let you give that server to Elias, no matter what the cost."

I looked at her in absolute shock, my entire understanding of our marriage crumbling into dust.

"He has Leo, Sarah!" I shouted desperately, tears of frustration stinging my eyes.

"If I do not bring him the data, he will execute our son without a second thought."

Sarah's hands trembled slightly, a brief flicker of maternal agony breaking through her icy facade.

"You never really knew me, Marcus," she confessed softly, refusing to break eye contact.

"I was an embedded sleeper agent for the Syndicate, assigned to monitor you for the past ten years."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the stomach, knocking the breath completely out of my lungs.

My perfect suburban life, the bake sales, the quiet evenings, everything was a meticulously crafted lie.

"But I fell in love with you, and I fell in love with our son," she continued, her voice breaking.

"I defected from the Syndicate, and I have been secretly hunting Elias to protect our family."

She lowered the pistol slowly, pulling a small, glowing data drive from her jacket pocket.

"This is the real server, Marcus, and I have already programmed a lethal tracking virus inside it."

She handed me the drive, her eyes burning with a fierce, uncompromising determination.

"We are going to give Elias exactly what he wants, and then we are going to burn his entire empire to the ground."

Before I could fully process her incredible plan, the massive vault door slammed completely shut behind us.

Thick, toxic green gas began aggressively pouring into the room through the overhead ventilation vents.

Elias's voice echoed through the vault's hidden intercom system with a malicious, echoing laugh.

"Did you really think I would let either of you leave this bank alive?"
