Chapter 10 - The Retribution

I raised my heavy pistol and shot the lock off the trunk of the black sedan with a deafening crack.

I threw the metal lid open, praying silently that Elias had actually told the truth.

Leo was curled up inside, bound with heavy zip-ties, but he was completely unharmed and staring up at me with wide eyes.

"Dad!" he cried, bursting into relieved tears as I quickly cut the plastic restraints away from his small wrists.

I pulled him into the most desperate, overwhelming embrace of my entire life, burying my face in his hair.

Sarah rushed over, dropping her weapons to wrap her arms securely around both of us, weeping with pure joy.

We held each other tightly on the dark, rainy tarmac, our family finally whole and safe once again.

The authorities arrived shortly after, having been anonymously tipped off by Sarah's encrypted distress beacon.

Elias and his surviving mercenaries were officially arrested and locked away in a maximum-security federal black site.

The Syndicate was completely dismantled by the government using the lethal virus Sarah had uploaded into their network.

We spent the next six months healing in a beautiful, secluded beach house far away from the dangers of the city.

Our marriage emerged stronger than ever, built on a foundation of absolute truth and unconditional love.

I watched Sarah and Leo laughing together as they built a massive sandcastle near the crashing ocean waves.

It was the perfect, peaceful ending we had fought so violently to achieve.

Later that evening, while Leo was fast asleep in his cozy bedroom, I walked in to check on him.

I noticed a strange, faint blue light glowing from underneath his small pillow.

I gently lifted the fabric, expecting to find a hidden tablet or a harmless electronic toy.

Instead, I found a sleek, metallic device covered in complex, alien symbols that I had never seen before in my entire life.

Leo suddenly opened his eyes, staring at me with a terrifying, hollow expression that did not belong to my son.

"The preparation is complete, Father," the boy whispered in a cold, distorted voice.

"They are finally coming for us."

What on earth had Elias actually put inside my son's mind during those missing hours?
