Chapter 3 - The Deception

I stood in my ruined kitchen, staring at the ransom note while my entire world crumbled into pieces.
Jax placed a heavy hand on my shoulder, urging me to get Leo to a secure location immediately.
We drove to a subterranean safehouse located directly beneath the city's abandoned subway tunnels.
I left Leo under the protection of ten heavily armed operatives, promising him that I would bring his mother back home.
I walked into the armory, loading every single tactical weapon I could carry into a heavy canvas duffel bag.
I needed to figure out how to stall the Syndicate without handing them a digital drive that no longer existed.
The Genesis Drive contained the decrypted identities of every undercover operative stationed across the globe.
I suddenly remembered a brilliant hacker named Maya who owed me her life.
I met Maya in a crowded, neon-lit underground cyber cafe on the edge of the industrial district.
She typed furiously on her customized keyboard, agreeing to create a perfectly convincing replica of the drive.
"The fake encryption will fool them for exactly ten minutes before the self-destruct virus melts their servers," Maya promised.
I thanked her, handing over a massive stack of untraceable cash before heading toward the shipyard.
The rain poured heavily as I arrived at the desolate, rusting docks just before the stroke of midnight.
Vance was standing near the edge of the pier, holding Sarah at gunpoint with a cruel, mocking smile on his face.
"Toss the drive over, Marcus, and maybe I let her swim home," Vance shouted over the roaring thunder.
I pulled the fake drive from my jacket and tossed it onto the wet wooden planks between us.
Vance aggressively grabbed the drive, lowering his weapon for just a fraction of a second.
I drew my pistol and fired a perfect, non-lethal shot directly into his kneecap.
Vance screamed in agony, collapsing to the floor as I rushed forward to grab my terrified wife.
I pulled the blindfold from her face, tears of immense relief flooding my eyes.
But as I looked closely at her features, my heart stopped completely in my chest.

The woman tied to the chair was not my wife.
It was a highly skilled body double wearing a hyper-realistic silicone mask.
