Chapter 7 - The Docks of Deceit

Matilda ripped the needle from her arm, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
“Ten million dollars,” she whispered in absolute horror.
“My own neighbors will kill me for that kind of money.”
Gabriel pulled the needle from his arm and sat up, his strength visibly returning.
“Nobody is going to touch you,” Gabriel swore, grabbing the hitman’s dropped pistol.
He walked over to the bound assassin and knocked him out completely with the butt of the gun.
“We need weapons, cash, and a secure vehicle,” Gabriel stated coldly.
He pulled a burner phone from the hitman’s pocket and dialed a memorized number.
“Vincenzo, it’s me,” Gabriel spoke into the phone.
There was a loud gasp on the other end of the line.
“Boss? You’re alive?” Vincenzo sounded genuinely shocked and relieved.
Vincenzo was Gabriel’s oldest friend and the captain of the south docks.
“Lorenzo tried to bury me,” Gabriel explained quickly.
“Meet me at Pier 42 in one hour with an armored car and heavy artillery.”
Gabriel hung up the phone and looked at Matilda.
“Vincenzo is my blood brother, he will get us out of the city,” Gabriel assured her.
They snuck out of the apartment building through the fire escape, avoiding the main streets.
They stole a parked sedan and drove silently toward the industrial waterfront.
The docks were cloaked in a thick, freezing fog rolling off Lake Michigan.
They parked behind a rusted shipping container and walked cautiously toward Pier 42.
A massive, black armored SUV was waiting under a single flickering streetlamp.
Vincenzo stood next to it, holding a duffel bag full of weapons.
Gabriel stepped out of the shadows, a fierce smile of brotherhood on his face.
“Vincenzo,” Gabriel greeted him warmly.
Vincenzo smiled back, but his eyes were completely dead.

“I’m sorry, Gabriel,” Vincenzo whispered.
Vincenzo dropped the duffel bag, raised a submachine gun, and opened fire directly at them.
