Chapter 2 - The Awakening

Carmine stared at the steel table in absolute disgust.
“You always were a pathetic, fat pig, Matilda,” Carmine sneered, raising his gun.
“Get off the corpse before I put a bullet in your ugly head.”
Matilda froze, her heart hammering wildly against Gabriel’s chest.
She realized Carmine had not come to mourn his boss.
He had come to make sure Gabriel was truly dead.
“Please, Carmine, leave him alone!” she begged, shielding Gabriel’s body with her own.
Carmine laughed, a cruel, echoing sound in the sterile room.
“Lorenzo wants to see the body himself to confirm the poison worked,” Carmine admitted.
Matilda’s eyes went wide with sheer terror.
Gabriel’s own brother, Lorenzo, had orchestrated this assassination.
“I’m just here to clean up the trash first,” Carmine said, aiming the laser sight at Matilda’s forehead.
She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the fatal gunshot.
A sudden, terrifying sound ripped through the room.
It was a deep, guttural growl that sounded like a waking demon.
Carmine’s smile vanished instantly.
Gabriel’s hand shot out from beneath the white sheet with blinding speed.
The supposedly dead mafia king grabbed a silver surgical scalpel from the tray next to the table.
He lunged upward, ignoring his massive wounds, and threw the blade like a dagger.
The scalpel buried itself deep into Carmine’s throat.
The traitor dropped his gun and fell to the floor, choking on his own blood.
Matilda screamed and scrambled off the table.
Gabriel collapsed back onto the metal surface, gasping violently for air.
His eyes opened, burning with a dark, lethal fire.
“Matilda,” he rasped, his voice completely raw.
“You’re alive,” she sobbed, rushing to his side.
He grabbed her wrist with surprising, terrifying strength.
“The doctor slowed my heart with a neurotoxin to bury me alive,” Gabriel whispered.
He tried to sit up but groaned in agony as blood seeped through his fresh bandages.
“We have to get out of here right now,” he commanded.
“If they find Carmine dead, they will slaughter us both.”
Matilda looked at his massive, bleeding frame.
“You can’t even walk, Mr. Falcone,” she cried.
Gabriel looked her dead in the eyes.
“Then you are going to have to carry me, little bird,” he replied.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps and shouting voices echoed from the hallway outside.
Lorenzo and his armed guards were marching directly toward the medical wing.
