Chapter 6 - The Blood Oath

Matilda panicked, looking wildly around her tiny apartment.
“I can’t take you to a hospital, Lorenzo owns the police!” she cried.
Gabriel closed his eyes, his pulse dropping rapidly.
Matilda looked down at the hitman’s tactical bag resting on the floor.
She ripped it open and found a military-grade field trauma kit.
It contained IV bags, tubing, and surgical needles.
“What is your blood type?” Matilda demanded, shaking Gabriel’s shoulder.
“O-negative,” Gabriel whispered faintly.
Matilda let out a massive sigh of relief.
“I am a universal donor,” she said, rolling up her own sleeve.
She quickly sanitized her arm and Gabriel’s arm, acting on pure adrenaline.
She successfully inserted the needle into her own vein, watching the dark red blood flow through the clear tube.
She connected the other end to Gabriel’s arm, initiating a direct transfusion.
They sat there in the quiet apartment, physically connected by the life flowing between them.
Gabriel stared at her, his dark eyes filled with something entirely new.
He didn't look at her like a maid anymore.
He looked at her like a savior, a warrior, and an equal.
“Why are you doing this for me?” Gabriel asked softly.
“Because you were the only one who treated me like a human being,” Matilda answered honestly.
Color slowly began to return to Gabriel’s pale face as the fresh blood entered his system.
He reached out and gently touched her cheek, wiping away a stray tear.
“When I take my city back, you will never scrub a floor again,” Gabriel promised fiercely.
“You will be a queen.”
Matilda’s heart fluttered wildly in her chest.
Suddenly, her cheap radio on the kitchen counter interrupted the quiet moment.
It was a breaking news broadcast on the local Chicago station.
Lorenzo Falcone’s voice echoed through the small apartment.
“My beloved brother Gabriel was murdered tonight by a deranged, disgruntled employee,” Lorenzo announced over the airwaves.
Matilda’s blood ran completely cold.

“I am offering a ten million dollar reward for anyone who brings me the head of the maid named Matilda Higgins,” Lorenzo declared.
Every single gang, hitman, and corrupt cop in Chicago was now hunting her.
