Chapter 6 - The Heist in Heels

Elena gasped silently as she stared at the locket in Julian’s hand.
Alex clamped a hand over her mouth and pressed her back against the cold wall.
Julian casually walked to the server, typing a long sequence of numbers into the keypad.
He pulled the sequence from a tiny piece of paper hidden inside the locket.
The screen glowed green, indicating the transfer was initiating.
Julian smirked, placed the locket on the desk, and turned to leave the room to take a phone call.
The heavy door clicked shut behind him, but it did not lock.
“We have exactly three minutes before that transfer finishes,” Alex whispered, releasing her.
Elena scrambled to the desk and grabbed the locket.
Alex began frantically typing on his decryption drive to abort the process.
“Cancel the transfer, Alex, just do it!” Elena urged.
“I’m trying, but the syndicate’s firewall is incredibly aggressive,” he replied, sweat forming on his brow.
Elena opened the locket, expecting to find the piece of paper with the passcode.
Instead, a tightly folded, aged piece of parchment fell out.
She unfolded it while Alex continued to hack the server.
The handwriting belonged to her father.
She read the first few lines, and her breath hitched in her throat.
“Alex, we need to leave right now,” she said, her voice shaking.
“Not until I stop this transfer,” he growled, hitting the keys harder.
“Alex, look at this!” she practically yelled, shoving the letter in his face.
Alex glanced at the parchment, annoyed by the distraction.
His eyes scanned the words, and his face drained of all color.
The progress bar on the server hit ninety-nine percent.
Alex slowly backed away from the keyboard.
He looked at Elena with a mixture of horror and pure hatred.
“Your father didn't just steal my family’s company,” Alex whispered, his voice trembling.
The server chimed, signaling the transfer was complete.
The vault plunged into absolute darkness as the power was cut.

Alex’s voice echoed in the pitch black.
“Your father murdered mine.”
