Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Truth

I stared at the old insurance document, my hands trembling uncontrollably.

My mother had supposedly died of a sudden, aggressive heart failure.

The paperwork in my hands told a completely different and horrifying story.

My father had forged a physician's signature to bypass a required medical autopsy.

Attached to the payout statement was an old receipt from an unregulated chemical supply company.

The receipt was for a massive quantity of highly untraceable agricultural poison.

My father had murdered my mother for her life insurance, just like he was trying to murder me.

Liam gently took the papers from my hands and secured them in his jacket.

He told me this was enough evidence to put my father in federal prison for the rest of his life.

But we still needed to find my backpack to secure my future in Boston.

Suddenly, Liam's phone buzzed loudly in the quiet office.

He answered it on speakerphone, assuming it was his investigative partner.

Instead, my father's cold, furious voice echoed through the small room.

My father calmly stated that he knew Liam had helped me escape the hospital.

He also revealed that he was currently sitting inside Liam's apartment.

I heard a muffled, terrified scream in the background of the call.

It was Olivia.

My father told me that if I did not bring the documents from the safe to him immediately, Olivia would pay the price.

He demanded we meet at the old diner where I used to work the night shift.

He gave us exactly thirty minutes before he would do something we all regretted.

I looked at Liam in absolute despair, realizing I had dragged him into a deadly hostage situation.

Liam pulled a heavy handgun from his ankle holster and loaded a fresh magazine.

He looked me dead in the eye and said we were going to set a trap.
