Chapter 8 - The Explosive Breach

The tactical transport vehicle went completely silent as the terrifying report from the sniper unit echoed through the comms.

“Colonel, if we breach the main doors, we will trigger a massive chain reaction,” the SWAT commander warned, wiping sweat from his brow.

Vance cursed loudly, slamming his fist against the metal wall of the vehicle.

“We can't just sit here and wait for them to execute the hostages, we need an alternative entry point,” Vance demanded.

I studied the digital blueprints of the old sulfur plant glowing on the tactical monitor.

I noticed a small, highly restricted maintenance shaft designed for chemical ventilation located near the roof.

“Sir, the ventilation shaft on the north side bypasses the main floor completely, I can fit through there and disable the primary detonator from the inside,” I offered.

The SWAT commander shook his head vigorously. “That is a suicide mission, Captain; if you make one wrong move, you will blow yourself to pieces.”

I tightened the straps on my Kevlar vest, my face completely set in unwavering determination.

“I spent nine months defusing improvised explosive devices in a combat zone, Commander, I know exactly what I am doing.”

Vance looked at me with deep respect and finally gave a short, decisive nod.

“You have exactly ten minutes before the execution deadline, Laura, do not fail,” Vance ordered.

I slipped out of the vehicle and moved silently through the shadows, avoiding the armed patrols guarding the perimeter of the plant.

I scaled a rusted fire escape ladder, my muscles burning as I quietly reached the flat, tar-covered roof.

I found the heavy metal grate covering the ventilation shaft and used a specialized quiet-cut tool to slice through the heavy steel bolts.

I slid feet-first into the narrow, suffocatingly tight metal tube, the heavy smell of old sulfur making my eyes water violently.

I crawled downward for what felt like an eternity, finally reaching the glowing vent overlooking the massive main floor of the plant.

Through the metal slats, I could see Diane and Megan tied to heavy steel chairs in the center of the room.

They were both crying hysterically, surrounded by heavy barrels of volatile chemicals wired directly to a digital detonator.

Four heavily armed syndicate mercenaries were setting up bright lights and a video camera for the live execution broadcast.

I carefully popped the vent cover off and silently dropped down onto a high metal catwalk directly above the explosive barrels.

I crawled along the catwalk, positioning myself directly over the complex wiring of the primary detonator.

I pulled a pair of specialized wire cutters from my tactical vest, taking a deep, incredibly steadying breath.

I analyzed the wiring, knowing that cutting the wrong colored wire would instantly vaporize everyone in the building.

I isolated the primary power lead, holding my breath as I squeezed the heavy metal cutters.

With a soft, metallic snip, the bright red countdown timer on the detonator instantly went completely dark.

The explosives were officially disabled.

“Command, the primary detonator is neutralized, you are clear to breach the main doors,” I whispered into my secure radio.

Before Vance could even reply, the heavy metal catwalk beneath me gave a loud, agonizing groan of rusted metal.

The rusted bolts holding the catwalk to the ceiling suddenly snapped, and the entire metal platform violently collapsed.

I plummeted thirty feet through the air, crashing heavily onto the concrete floor right in the middle of the armed mercenaries.
