Chapter 2 - The Stolen Sanctuary

I stepped into what used to be my peaceful, minimalist sanctuary.
The soothing gray walls were now covered in a loud, aggressive floral wallpaper that hurt my eyes.
My custom-built California King bed was gone, replaced by a gaudy, antique four-poster monstrosity.
Even the heavy oak dressers I had painstakingly restored by hand were missing.
“What did you do to my furniture?” I demanded, turning around to find Ethan standing nervously in the doorway.
Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, a nervous habit he always displayed when he was lying or hiding something.
“Mom said the old furniture was bad for her back, so we sold it to a vintage dealer in town,” Ethan admitted quietly.
My heart pounded furiously against my ribs as the sheer audacity of their actions truly set in.
They hadn't just moved in; they had systematically erased my entire existence from the house.
“You sold my property without my permission?” I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
“It was just furniture, Laura, we used the money to buy the new bed and pay for Megan’s business supplies,” Ethan defended weakly.
Diane pushed past Ethan, looking incredibly smug in her hostile takeover of my space.
“If you are going to throw a tantrum over some old wood, you can sleep in the office downstairs,” Diane sneered.
I didn't scream, and I didn't cry.
My military training had taught me that losing your temper was a tactical disadvantage.
I picked up my duffel bag and walked calmly out of the ruined bedroom.
“Fine, I will sleep in the office tonight,” I agreed smoothly, completely surprising both of them.
Ethan let out a massive sigh of relief, clearly believing I was just going to submit to their new world order.
“Thank you, honey, I promise we will figure all this out tomorrow,” Ethan smiled, trying to hug me.
I stepped back, completely avoiding his touch.
“Don't touch me, Ethan, you lost that privilege the second you sold my things,” I warned him.
I walked downstairs to the small office, which was cramped and smelled like cheap candle wax.
I locked the door, pulled out my encrypted military laptop, and connected to the secure Wi-Fi.
I didn't sleep that night; I spent hours running background checks, pulling financial records, and formulating a flawless counter-attack.
At exactly 4:30 AM, I closed my laptop with a dark, satisfied smile.
I had discovered exactly where Megan’s "bad investment" money had actually gone, and it wasn't a business failure.
At 5:00 AM, the shrill, obnoxious sound of a heavy metal air horn shattered the peaceful morning silence.
I walked into the kitchen holding the horn, ready to show Diane whose house she was pretending to control.
“Rise and shine, ladies, it's time for morning formation!” I yelled into the hallway.
Megan stumbled out of the guest room, her hair a messy bird's nest, looking absolutely terrified.
“What is wrong with you, are you crazy?” Megan shrieked, covering her ears.
Diane marched out of the master bedroom, her face red with absolute, unhinged fury.
“You have officially crossed the line, Laura, I am calling the police right now to have you removed!” Diane threatened.

I smiled calmly and tossed a thick, printed file folder directly onto the kitchen island.
“Call them, Diane, I am sure the police would love to hear about the three hundred thousand dollars Megan embezzled from her last employer.”
