Chapter 4 - The Stolen Deployment

Ethan’s face turned an ugly shade of ash gray as I tossed the second folder onto the counter.
While I was overseas risking my life in a combat zone, I had authorized a portion of my hazard pay to be deposited into our joint account for household emergencies.
I had assumed Ethan was using it to maintain the property and pay the property taxes.
“You diverted over forty thousand dollars of my combat pay into a private, hidden account under your mother's maiden name,” I stated coldly.
Diane looked at Ethan in complete shock; even she didn’t know the full extent of his financial betrayal.
“Ethan, what did you do with all that money?” Diane demanded, her voice shrill with panic.
Ethan backed away toward the front door, looking like a cornered animal desperately searching for an escape route.
“I was trying to double the money in the crypto market, Laura, I wanted to surprise you with a massive return when you got home!” Ethan lied poorly.
I pulled out the printed bank statements, highlighting the massive, outgoing transactions in bright yellow marker.
“You didn’t invest in crypto, Ethan, you transferred thirty thousand dollars to a woman named Sarah Jenkins over the last six months,” I revealed.
The kitchen went deadly silent, the heavy betrayal hanging thick and suffocating in the air.
Not only had my family stolen my home, but my husband had used my blood money to fund his secret affair.
“I want all three of you out of my house right now, or I am calling the military police and having you arrested for grand larceny,” I commanded.
They didn't try to argue anymore; the overwhelming evidence had completely destroyed any leverage they thought they had.
For the next hour, I stood in the hallway like a drill sergeant, watching them frantically stuff their belongings into garbage bags.
Diane cried the entire time, mourning the loss of the luxurious lifestyle she had stolen from me.
Megan carried out boxes of her cheap, awful-smelling candles, refusing to even look me in the eye.
Ethan walked out last, carrying a single suitcase, looking incredibly pathetic and entirely broken.
“Laura, please, I can explain everything about Sarah, it meant absolutely nothing,” Ethan pleaded at the front door.
I slammed the heavy wooden door directly in his face, engaging the deadbolt with a loud, satisfying click.
I was finally alone in my own house, the heavy burden of their toxic presence completely removed.
I spent the rest of the day cleaning the house, ripping down the pink laminated rules, and restoring some sense of order.
That evening, I poured myself a glass of expensive bourbon and sat on the living room couch, enjoying the beautiful, hard-earned silence.
Suddenly, my secure military phone buzzed loudly on the coffee table.
I checked the caller ID; it was my commanding officer, Colonel Vance.
“Laura, I need you to listen to me very carefully and do not panic,” Colonel Vance said, his voice incredibly tight and serious.
“What is it, sir?” I asked, my combat instincts immediately flaring up.

“The financial records you pulled this morning triggered a massive red flag in the Department of Defense security grid.”
“The offshore accounts Megan was using belong to a known international terrorist syndicate, and they know you just accessed their data.”
