Chapter 5 - The Unseen Threat

I gripped the secure phone tightly, my knuckles turning completely white.

“Sir, are you telling me my sister-in-law is actively funding a terrorist organization?” I asked, my voice deadly calm.

Colonel Vance sighed heavily on the other end of the encrypted line.

“Megan is just a foolish pawn, Laura; she used an illegal dark web broker to hide her embezzled funds to avoid paying taxes.”

“Unfortunately, that specific broker is a primary financial funnel for a highly dangerous overseas syndicate.”

I realized the gravity of the situation instantly; I had unwittingly poked a massive, deadly hornet's nest while trying to evict my terrible in-laws.

“Because you used your secure military credentials to trace the money, the syndicate’s firewall flagged your physical location,” Vance explained grimly.

“They are sending a highly trained retrieval team to your house right now to eliminate the security breach.”

My blood ran completely cold as I looked toward the large, vulnerable windows of my living room.

“How long do I have, Colonel?” I asked, already moving toward the hidden gun safe in the hallway closet.

“Local tactical units are twenty minutes away, but our intel suggests the hit squad is already inside your neighborhood.”

“Do not engage unless absolutely necessary, Laura, just secure the perimeter and survive until backup arrives.”

The line went dead, leaving me in absolute, terrifying silence.

I quickly punched the code into my gun safe and pulled out my customized, military-grade tactical shotgun and a heavy Kevlar vest.

I moved silently through the house, shutting off every single light and closing the heavy blackout curtains.

I was no longer a betrayed wife dealing with domestic drama; I was a highly trained soldier fighting a war on my own home turf.

I took up a defensive position at the top of the stairs, plunging the entire house into complete, pitch-black darkness.

Five agonizing minutes passed in absolute silence.

Then, I heard the distinct, metallic scratch of lock-picking tools working on the back patio door.

They were incredibly professional, completely silent, and highly efficient.

The heavy glass door slid open with a soft whoosh, and three large, shadowy figures stepped into my kitchen.

They were wearing advanced night-vision goggles and carrying suppressed, short-barreled rifles.

They moved in perfect tactical formation, sweeping the lower floor with lethal precision.

I raised my shotgun, aiming directly at the lead figure as he approached the bottom of the stairs.

Before I could pull the trigger, the front door of my house suddenly burst open with a massive, deafening crash.

I expected the police tactical team, but instead, Ethan stumbled into the dark foyer, drunk and crying loudly.

“Laura, please let me back in, I don't want to go to a hotel!” Ethan yelled blindly into the dark house.

The three assassins instantly spun around, aiming their suppressed rifles directly at my foolish, unarmed husband.
