Chapter 7 - The Ransom Demand

I sat in the sterile, brightly lit interrogation room of the local police precinct, drinking bitter coffee from a styrofoam cup.

Colonel Vance had arrived via helicopter from the base, using his high-level military clearance to take total control of the investigation.

Ethan sat in the corner of the room, looking completely pathetic and still shivering from the adrenaline crash.

“The syndicate realized Megan was the original source of the traced funds,” Colonel Vance explained grimly, pointing to a map on the wall.

“They abducted her and Diane to interrogate them about what other sensitive financial data they might have exposed.”

Ethan buried his face in his hands, finally realizing that his family's arrogant greed had led them directly into a lethal nightmare.

“They are going to kill my mother and sister, aren't they?” Ethan sobbed loudly.

“Not yet,” Vance replied, pulling a secure tablet from his briefcase. “They just sent an encrypted ransom demand to Megan's old laptop.”

Vance played a distorted audio file; a heavily masked voice demanded the release of a high-ranking syndicate lieutenant currently held in federal custody.

If the government didn't comply within twenty-four hours, Diane and Megan would be executed on a live internet broadcast.

“The United States government does not negotiate with terrorists, Ethan; we cannot authorize that trade,” Vance stated with absolute, cold finality.

Ethan jumped up from his chair, his face red with sudden, desperate anger.

“You have to do something, you can't just let them die!” Ethan yelled at the Colonel.

I remained completely silent, analyzing the tactical map and the known operational patterns of the syndicate.

“Sir, the mercenaries abandoned their vehicle on the highway, which means they transferred to a secondary, pre-staged safe house nearby,” I pointed out calmly.

Vance nodded, clearly impressed that my combat instincts were still razor-sharp despite the personal chaos.

“We are running satellite sweeps of all industrial properties within a fifty-mile radius, but we need a massive stroke of luck to find them in time,” Vance admitted.

I thought about the incredibly brief encounter I had with the assassins on my stairs.

I remembered the heavy, distinct smell of raw sulfur and stale saltwater clinging to their tactical gear when they breached the back door.

“They aren't in an industrial warehouse, Colonel, they are hiding near the old, abandoned sulfur plant by the shipping docks,” I realized suddenly.

Vance’s eyes widened, and he immediately began barking rapid coordinates into his secure military radio.

Within ten minutes, a massive, joint-task-force raid was fully authorized and spinning up for immediate deployment.

I stood up and grabbed the heavy Kevlar vest the police had temporarily confiscated.

“Where do you think you are going, Laura?” Ethan asked, grabbing my arm.

“I am going to get your family back, Ethan,” I said, aggressively pulling my arm away.

“Why? After everything they did to you, after they tried to steal your house and your money, why would you risk your life for them?” Ethan asked, genuinely confused.

I looked at the weak, cowardly man I had foolishly married, realizing he would never understand the core concept of duty.

“Because I am a soldier, Ethan, and I protect American citizens, even the ones I absolutely despise.”

I walked out of the precinct and climbed into the back of a heavily armored tactical transport vehicle.

We drove through the dark city streets, approaching the massive, rusted ruins of the abandoned sulfur plant near the ocean.

As we quietly established a perimeter around the massive steel building, my radio suddenly cracked to life with a frantic warning.

“Command, we have a massive problem; thermal imaging shows the building is rigged with enough explosives to level the entire city block!” the sniper unit reported.
