Chapter 9 - The Standoff

Nathan aimed the barrel of the gun directly at the center of my chest.
The entire room erupted into chaos as five police officers instantly drew their weapons on him.
The lead detective screamed at Nathan to drop the gun before they blew his head off.
Nathan laughed darkly, his finger hovering dangerously close to the sensitive trigger.
He declared that if he was going to prison, he was going to make sure I never saw Leo again.
Before anyone could react, Brooke lunged forward and tackled her brother from the side.
The gun fired with a deafening crack, the bullet shattering a massive crystal vase inches from my head.
The tactical officers swarmed Nathan, wrestling him to the marble floor and crushing his wrist until he dropped the weapon.
Patricia screamed in absolute horror as a female officer roughly slammed her against the wall to handcuff her.
I gasped for air, trembling violently as I realized I had actually survived the night.
The detective gently placed his hand on my back, assuring me that the nightmare was finally over.
I reached for my phone to call the safehouse and tell Leo I was coming to get him.
The screen lit up with an emergency alert from the nanny's secure tracking application.

The front door of the safehouse had just been breached by an unauthorized person.
Nathan had secretly sent his private security team to grab my son while we were distracted.
