Chapter 5 - The Stolen Leverage

Panic clawed at my throat as I dumped the entire contents of my bag onto the ugly floral carpet.

Diapers, wipes, and spare clothes scattered everywhere, but the blue folder was missing.

I tried to mentally retrace my frantic steps through the airport and the taxi ride.

Then a horrifying realization struck me like a bolt of lightning.

The airport security guard had bumped into my bag when he grabbed my shoulder.

He had not been checking on me out of kindness.

Brooke's face turned deathly pale as she realized we had absolutely zero leverage left.

She backed away toward the door, muttering that Nathan was going to kill both of us.

Before she could turn the handle, her cell phone began to vibrate violently in her pocket.

The caller ID displayed Nathan's personal number.

Brooke answered the phone with trembling fingers and put the device on speaker mode.

Nathan's voice echoed through the small motel room, sounding dangerously calm.

He told Brooke he knew exactly where she was and exactly what she was trying to do.

He then told me to listen very closely to the background noise on his end of the call.

I heard the muffled, terrified weeping of my lawyer, Sarah.

Nathan whispered that if I did not return to New York immediately, Sarah would suffer the consequences.
