Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Alliance

My blood turned to absolute ice in my veins.

There was no physical way Brooke could have tracked me to this random motel so quickly.

Brooke lowered the gun slightly and whispered forcefully through the door for me to let her in.

She swore on her own life that she was not there to hurt me or Leo.

I hesitated for a fraction of a second before slowly unlatching the deadbolt.

Brooke pushed her way inside, instantly locking the door behind her and throwing the gun onto the bed.

She looked entirely completely disheveled, a far cry from the perfectly manicured woman at the lake house.

Brooke confessed that Patricia had purposely crushed those peanuts into the dipping sauce.

Patricia had wanted to prove that I was just a hysterical, overprotective mother who imagined medical threats.

Brooke then pulled a small USB drive from her designer coat pocket.

She claimed it contained the kitchen security footage proving Patricia deliberately poisoned my son.

However, Brooke demanded the blue folder in exchange for handing over the priceless evidence.

She needed the financial documents to protect herself from taking the fall for Nathan's illegal business.

I slowly reached into my oversized tote bag to retrieve the folder.

My hand scraped against the completely empty bottom of the canvas bag.

The folder was gone.
