Chapter 6 - The Return Flight

Brooke and I sat in total silence on the private jet Nathan had arranged for our return.

I held a sleeping Leo tightly against my chest, praying I was making the right decision.

Brooke kept staring out the small oval window, completely paralyzed by her fear of her brother.

I quietly whispered a desperate plan to her while the flight attendant was completely out of earshot.

We needed to secure Leo in a safe place before stepping foot back into the Whitaker estate.

Brooke surprisingly agreed and gave me the address of a trusted underground nanny she knew in Manhattan.

As soon as we landed, we managed to drop Leo off at the anonymous apartment building.

My heart shattered as I kissed his forehead goodbye, promising I would be back for him.

Brooke and I arrived at the massive iron gates of the Whitaker family estate just after midnight.

The heavy gates swung open automatically, sealing us inside the sprawling compound.

I walked through the grand mahogany front doors, bracing myself for Nathan's wrath.

Instead, the enormous foyer was completely silent and dimly lit.

Patricia stepped out from the shadows of the formal dining room, wearing an elegant silk robe.

She smiled at me with a warmth that made my skin crawl with pure dread.

In her right hand, she casually held a medical syringe filled with a thick, amber liquid.

She happily informed me that it was pure, unrefined peanut oil.
