The screen instantly lit up with a barrage of terrifying notifications.
There were thirty-two missed calls from Nathan.
There were fourteen voicemails from my mother-in-law, Patricia.
I ignored every single one of them and quickly opened my banking app.
I needed to check the balance of my secret emergency fund to secure a hotel room.

Access denied.
My heart skipped a beat as I hastily typed in the credentials for our joint credit card.
The account had been entirely frozen by the primary cardholder.
A cold sweat broke out across my forehead as a text message popped up from an unknown number.
It was a screenshot of an official police alert.
