Chapter 6 - The Descent

Lucas flatly refused to let me go down into that basement, his protective instincts overriding every logical thought.

He stated he would face Charles himself, end this nightmare once and for all, and make him pay for everything he had done.

I grabbed his arm, begging him to stay, warning him that Charles was completely unhinged and wouldn't hesitate to murder him again.

Samantha logically suggested we call the FBI tactical team that was currently setting up a perimeter outside the building.

Lucas shook his head grimly, explaining that men like Charles never bluff when they are backed into a corner.

He revealed that the explosives down in the basement were highly likely tied to a dead-man's switch connected to Charles's pulse.

If a police sniper took Charles out from a distance, the detonator would trigger, and the entire maternity ward would go up in flames.

I gently kissed my baby's forehead and carefully handed him over to a terrified Samantha.

I strictly ordered her to lock herself in the en-suite bathroom and not come out no matter what she heard from the hallway.

Ignoring the searing pain in my surgical wounds, I forced myself out of the bed and grabbed Lucas's hand.

Lucas and I walked out into the ominous, red-lit hallway together, ready to face the monster who had ruined our lives.

The silence in the evacuated hospital corridors was absolutely deafening as we made our way to the service elevator.

We slowly descended the concrete emergency stairwell, the heavy air growing colder and smelling faintly of diesel fuel.

The heavy reinforced metal door leading to the main generator room was slightly ajar, humming with electrical power.

I pushed the door open, my bare feet trembling against the freezing concrete floor.

Charles was standing near the massive power turbines, holding a sophisticated electronic detonator in his right hand.

Courtney was tied tightly to a metal chair in the corner, sobbing hysterically with a strip of duct tape over her mouth.

Charles smiled victoriously when he saw me, but his confident grin instantly vanished when his eyes locked onto Lucas.

He didn't look scared, shocked, or remorseful at the sight of the son-in-law he had ordered killed.

He simply threw his head back and began laughing a deep, chilling, maniacal laugh that echoed off the concrete walls.

He leveled the detonator directly at Lucas and smiled wickedly.

He proudly declared that he knew Lucas had survived the crash all along, and this trap was designed specifically to draw him out.
