Chapter 3 - The Counterattack

I lunged forward in the hospital bed, but the blinding pain in my surgical incision forced me violently back against the pillows.

Charles warned me that any aggressive behavior would only prove his fabricated point to the courts and guarantee I never saw my son again.

He turned his back on me completely and told Courtney it was time to take their beautiful new grandson home.

As they proudly marched toward the exit, the heavy hospital room door swung open with enough force to rattle the hinges.

Samantha strode into the room, flanked by two heavily armed private security contractors and the hospital's chief of medicine.

She held up her own thick stack of legal documents, her eyes blazing with a fierce, uncompromising determination.

She loudly announced that she had filed an immediate emergency injunction with the state supreme court while I was in surgery.

A federal judge had completely overridden Judge Miller's local custody order due to a massive, undisclosed conflict of interest.

The towering security guards stepped forward, physically blocking Charles and Courtney from leaving the room with my child.

The chief of medicine carefully but firmly took my crying son from Courtney's arms, ignoring her outraged shrieks.

Charles's face turned a violent shade of purple as his meticulously planned scheme began to crumble before his eyes.

He threatened to disbar Samantha, destroy her entire law firm, and bury her so deep she would never practice law again.

Samantha calmly adjusted her glasses and informed him that she had already forwarded all of his banking records to the FBI.

Charles grabbed Courtney by the arm and stormed out of the hospital room, cursing loudly enough to echo down the hallway.

The kind doctor stepped forward and finally placed my beautiful, warm baby boy onto my chest.

I allowed myself to cry for the first time, wrapping my arms protectively around the only piece of Lucas I had left.

Suddenly, Samantha's phone vibrated violently against the plastic tray table, breaking the momentary peace.

She read the incoming text message, and the victorious color instantly drained from her face.

She looked at me with pure terror and said the FBI had just raided Charles's corporate office in downtown Syracuse.

They didn't find Charles, but they found an executed contract for a second hit, and the primary target was my newborn son.
