Chapter 1 - The Trap Closes

Charles snatched his ringing phone off the desk with a vicious, triumphant smirk.

He clearly believed this was another one of his lackeys calling to confirm his total victory over my life.

Instead, his expression shifted violently as he listened to the panicked voice on the other end of the line.

The piercing wail of ambulance sirens shattered the quiet morning air as they pulled aggressively into my driveway.

Paramedics rushed onto the wooden porch, completely ignoring Courtney who was still giggling behind her manicured hand.

They lifted my trembling, sweat-soaked body onto a stretcher as another agonizing contraction ripped through my core.

The pain in my abdomen was blinding, but my furious gaze remained locked on the man who raised me.

I could see Charles storming out of the front door, furiously waving a crumpled piece of legal paper.

He shouted at the arriving police officers that he was my legal guardian and that I was suffering a hysterical episode.

A stern female officer stepped firmly between his aggressive posture and the open ambulance doors, placing a hand on her weapon.

Samantha arrived in her sleek black sedan just as the paramedics were securing my stretcher in the back of the vehicle.

She looked at my father with a level of pure, unadulterated disgust that I had never seen from the professional attorney.

Without saying a single word to him, she bypassed the police line and climbed into the back of the ambulance to sit beside me.

The heavy metal doors slammed shut, finally leaving my father screaming furiously on the front lawn of the house I owned.

I squeezed Samantha's hand so hard my knuckles turned white as another massive wave of labor agony hit my body.

The heart monitor beeped rapidly, echoing the sheer terror pumping through my veins.

Samantha leaned in close to my ear, ensuring the busy paramedics couldn't hear the sensitive nature of our conversation.

She promised me that the trust account was completely secure for now, but her dark eyes were filled with absolute dread.

She took a deep breath before revealing that she had found something terrifying hidden deep within Lucas's private bank records.

Charles had received an anonymous, untraceable wire transfer of exactly fifty thousand dollars the day before Lucas died on that highway.

The money had been routed through three different countries, but Samantha's investigator had tracked it back to its original source.

It came from a corporate shell account linked directly to the independent trucking company that caused the fatal accident.

My heart stopped completely in my chest as the horrific realization washed over my exhausted mind.

My father hadn't just come here to steal my house and strip away the company Lucas built from scratch.

The car crash outside Syracuse wasn't an unfortunate tragedy caused by black ice and bad weather.

My father had paid a man to murder my husband.
