Chapter 10 - The Legacy

The senior agent respectfully called him Special Agent Gallagher, asking for a full sitrep on the explosive device.

Lucas wrapped his strong arms around me and finally explained the terrifying reality of the last three years.

He had been deeply embedded undercover for the FBI to systematically dismantle Charles's massive cartel money-laundering syndicate.

The fatal car crash outside Syracuse was a highly elaborate event staged by the Bureau to pull him out of the dangerous field assignment safely.

He couldn't tell me the truth beforehand because Charles had deeply corrupted informants inside our local police department monitoring my every move.

By making Charles confidently believe he had won, the FBI was finally able to trace every illegal offshore transaction directly to his personal accounts.

Two weeks later, the nightmare had completely faded, and I was finally back inside the warm walls of my own home.

Charles was locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, facing consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Courtney had cowardly testified against him in exchange for full immunity, though she was left entirely penniless and banished from the state.

The beautiful house, the lucrative logistics company, and all of our seized bank accounts were securely and legally returned to my name.

I sat peacefully on the back porch, gently rocking my beautiful, healthy baby boy in the warm afternoon sun.

Lucas walked out holding two steaming mugs of sweet tea, kissed the top of my head, and sat beside us in perfect contentment.

Our horrific nightmare was finally over, and we had the rest of our lives to build a beautiful family together.

Later that evening, I went into Lucas's home office to put the updated legal files safely back into the hidden wall safe.

I pushed the heavy stacks of corporate documents aside and noticed a small, dusty wooden box tucked away in the deepest corner.

I carefully opened the ancient latch, expecting to find old family heirlooms or forgotten jewelry.

Inside the velvet-lined box was an official birth certificate and a recent photograph of a five-year-old girl.

The little girl in the picture had Lucas's exact, unmistakable brown eyes and his distinct smile.

My blood ran completely cold as I read the birth certificate, which clearly listed the child's biological mother as Courtney Baldwin.
