Chapter 4 - The Lockdown

The hospital immediately plunged into a full code-silver lockdown the moment Samantha relayed the terrifying news to security.

Heavy steel barricade doors slid shut across every entrance and exit of the maternity ward, sealing us inside.

Nobody was allowed in or out, and all non-essential personnel were ordered to shelter in place until the police arrived.

I held my baby so tightly against my chest that I could feel his tiny, rapid heartbeat syncing with my own panicked rhythm.

Samantha paced the small room like a caged animal, dialing the federal agent in charge of the rapidly escalating case.

The agent confirmed that Charles had hired a ruthless professional fixer to ensure there were no remaining heirs to the Gallagher estate.

The hospital security footage showed that the dangerous fixer was already inside the building, dressed in stolen hospital scrubs.

Without warning, the bright fluorescent lights in the hallway flickered wildly before dying completely.

The emergency backup generators kicked in seconds later, casting a sickly, sinister red glow through the small window of my door.

Heavy, methodical footsteps began to echo down the silent corridor outside my room, moving closer with terrifying purpose.

I could hear the metallic click of someone systematically checking the door handles of every single patient room on the floor.

The heavy footsteps stopped right outside my door, and a dark shadow eclipsed the red light bleeding through the window.

The heavy brass handle slowly began to turn, scraping against the locking mechanism Samantha had engaged moments earlier.

Samantha grabbed a heavy metal IV pole from the corner of the room, raising it like a baseball bat and preparing to swing.

I hid my baby entirely under the thick hospital blankets, praying he wouldn't cry and give away our exact position.

With a loud crack, the door's locking mechanism shattered, and the heavy wood creaked open into the room.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out of the red hallway light and into the shadows of my hospital room.

He slowly reached up and pulled off his surgical mask and cap, revealing a face I never thought I would see again.

My heart stopped dead in my chest as I stared at the deep brown eyes of my supposedly dead husband, Lucas.
