Chapter 9 - The Frozen Lake

The gun responded with a dull, hollow click.

Jason stared at the weapon in sheer confusion, pulling the trigger three more times with the exact same result.

Sarah coughed and smiled a bloody, triumphant smile up at him.

She revealed that she had secretly emptied the magazine when he was distracted by the cage dropping.

Furious beyond all measure, Jason threw the useless gun into the deep snow.

He grabbed her by the collar of her jacket and began dragging her violently through the blizzard.

They emerged from the trees onto the shore of a massive, frozen Canadian lake.

The ice was slick and treacherous, cracking ominously beneath their struggling weight.

Jason dragged her toward the center of the lake, where the ice was noticeably thinner and darker.

He intended to drown her in the freezing, black abyss and make it look like a tragic winter accident.

Sarah fought with every ounce of her strength, kicking his shins and throwing handfuls of snow into his eyes.

Jason overpowered her, lifting his heavy combat boot and stomping violently on the fragile ice.

A massive, spiderweb crack shot out across the frozen surface.

He stomped again, and the ice completely gave way with a terrifying, echoing crunch.

Freezing, dark water rushed up to meet them.

Jason grabbed Sarah's shoulders and violently shoved her backward into the deadly, freezing hole.

She plunged beneath the surface, the shocking cold instantly paralyzing her lungs.

Jason stood on the edge of the broken ice, laughing maniacally as he watched her sink into the darkness.

He finally felt a sense of absolute victory over the woman who had tried to destroy him.

Suddenly, a pair of freezing, desperate hands shot out of the water and grabbed his ankle with a vice-like grip.

Sarah used her final ounce of leverage to violently pull him down into the freezing water with her.
