Chapter 7 - The Steel Trap
A loud, mechanical grinding noise echoed from the ceiling the moment Jason stepped on the pressure plate.
Thick, heavy steel bars violently dropped down from hidden compartments in the wooden beams above.
The metal cage slammed into the reinforced floor, completely locking Jason inside a five-by-five square.
He dropped his gun and grabbed the freezing steel bars, shaking them with all his desperate might.
The cage did not budge a single millimeter.
Sarah walked slowly out of the kitchen, carrying a steaming mug of hot chocolate.
She was wearing a thick, comfortable sweater, looking healthier and happier than he had ever seen her.
She did not look afraid of the furious, screaming man trapped like a wild animal in her living room.
"I knew your massive ego would never allow you to just walk away," Sarah said peacefully.
Jason screamed every vile insult he could think of, threatening to tear her apart when he got out.
Sarah simply pulled up a comfortable armchair and sat safely outside the perimeter of the steel cage.
She explained that she had spent six months completely remodeling this cabin with the absolute best security engineers.
She wanted him to break in so she could finally confront him on her own terms.
She detailed exactly how she had meticulously gathered the evidence of his embezzlement, infidelity, and murder.
She had sent the final batch of evidence to the Canadian authorities just five minutes before he broke the door down.
Jason realized that the police were already on their way to arrest him for multiple international felonies.
He felt a terrifying sense of absolute panic closing in on his chest.
He reached into his stolen jacket pocket and pulled out a small, highly explosive breaching charge he had taken from the federal agent.
He smiled a wicked, bloody smile as he attached the explosive putty to the electronic locking mechanism of the cage.
