Chapter 6 - The Midnight Visitor

Eleanor watched Richard's throat bob as he seemingly swallowed the medication.

She smiled in deep satisfaction, took the empty glass, and turned to leave.

"Have a restful evening, Richard," she said softly before shutting the door behind her.

As soon as the lock clicked, Richard violently spat the two capsules into a napkin.

I exhaled a massive sigh of relief, leaning against the wall to support my shaking legs.

"Now, we wait for them to come confirm the kill," Richard whispered, tossing the napkin into the trash.

We turned off all the lights and sat in absolute silence for four agonizing hours.

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed midnight.

Suddenly, the faint sound of the bedroom door creaking open broke the silence.

I crouched behind the heavy velvet curtains, clutching a heavy brass candlestick.

A dark figure slipped into the room, moving quietly toward Richard's bed.

The moonlight caught the glint of a long, metallic syringe in the intruder's hand.

They were bringing a backup dose just in case the pills failed.

The figure leaned over Richard, raising the needle to plunge it into his IV line.

I lunged forward and slammed my hand against the light switch on the wall.

The sudden brightness blinded the intruder, causing them to stumble backward.

I tackled the person to the floor, pinning their arms down as the syringe skittered across the hardwood.

Richard threw off his blankets and stood up on his own two feet, towering over us.

I grabbed the intruder's dark hood and aggressively yanked it back.

May you like

I gasped in pure shock.

It was Valerie, Miguel's mistress.
