Chapter 2 - The Eavesdropper

Panic seized my chest as I stared at the blinking red light.

Richard immediately placed a finger over his lips, signaling me to stay perfectly quiet.

He gestured for me to hand him the tiny device.

With absolute precision, he wrapped it in a thick wool sock and shoved it deep into his dresser drawer to muffle the audio.

"We have to assume they heard everything," I whispered in sheer terror.

"No, the battery light is flashing red, meaning it stopped transmitting hours ago," he whispered back.

He told me to put the device exactly where I found it before whoever planted it came to change the batteries.

I crawled back under the bed and secured the bug to the metal frame.

"I need you to find out who placed it there, Maya," Richard commanded softly.

The next morning, I pretended to do my routine dusting around the sprawling estate.

I kept a close eye on Ethan's private study, waiting for him to leave for a business lunch.

As soon as his sports car pulled out of the driveway, I slipped into his office.

The room smelled of expensive cologne and cheap cigars.

I quickly rummaged through the papers scattered across his mahogany desk.

My eyes landed on a confidential legal document bearing a very familiar logo.

It was the corporate crest of my ex-husband's employer.

Ethan was selling Vitalis Health directly to Miguel's division.

I pulled out my phone and quickly snapped photos of the contracts.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door creaked open behind me.

I spun around to see Chloe, Ethan's wife, glaring at me with her arms crossed.

"What exactly do you think you're doing in here, Maya?" she asked, stepping into the room and blocking my only exit.
