Chapter 20 - The New Chapter

I watched Detective Harris walk away, disappearing into the crowd of tourists strolling along the boardwalk. The black card felt heavy in the palm of my hand.
I spent the next three days going through the mundane motions of my new life. I opened my bookstore, organized shelves, drank tea by the ocean, and watched the sunset. It was a beautiful, idyllic existence. But the silence in my house was deafening. The adrenaline that had kept me alive for the past year was gone, leaving a hollow, restless energy in its wake.
On the fourth night, a severe thunderstorm rolled off the coast, rattling the windows of my cottage. I sat on my couch in the dark, watching the lightning illuminate the stormy sea. I thought about my father. I thought about the helpless patients who had died in Richard's clandestine trials. I thought about how easily evil masqueraded in tailored suits and charming smiles.
I picked up the black card from my coffee table. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed the silver number.
It rang exactly once before a secure, automated voice answered. "Authentication required."
"Maya," I said clearly into the receiver.
There was a brief click, and then a live operator came on the line. "Good evening. We have been expecting your call. Please hold for Director Harris."
A moment later, Harris's familiar voice echoed through the speaker. "I knew the quiet life wouldn't suit you for long. Are you ready to go back to work?"
"I have a few conditions," I stated firmly, walking over to the window and watching the rain lash against the glass. "I choose my assignments. I operate independently. And if I find a target, I handle the extraction of evidence my way."
"Agreed," Harris replied without hesitation. "Your first file is being securely transmitted to your encrypted email now. It involves a tech conglomerate in Silicon Valley that is secretly harvesting user biometric data for foreign intelligence. The CEO is a very well-connected, very dangerous man."
"Dangerous is just a matter of perspective," I replied coldly.
I walked over to my desk and flipped open my secure laptop. The file was waiting in my inbox. I clicked open the dossier, my eyes scanning the target's face, his schedule, his weaknesses. The thrill of the hunt came rushing back, sharp and electric.
I was no longer the naive caregiver who walked into the Vance estate looking for a paycheck. I was no longer the victim of a manipulative ex-husband or a sociopathic billionaire. I had been forged in their fire, and I came out as something completely indestructible.
"I have the file," I told Harris. "I am booking a flight to San Francisco tonight."
"Welcome to the team, Maya," Harris said, before disconnecting the secure line.

I closed the laptop, a cold, calculating smile spreading across my face. The world was full of monsters hiding in plain sight. But they were about to learn that there was something much worse waiting for them in the dark.
I grabbed my coat, stepped out into the pouring rain, and vanished into the night.
